Dorm Decor: My Dorm & My Favorites!

Dorm Decor: My Dorm & My Favorites!

Hi, everyone!! I promised in my first semester overview post that I would do a more in-depth segment on my dorm decor. I decorated my dorm with a navy and white theme, and focused a lot on cute storage to make the space as effective as it is pretty. In my dorm at Auburn, every room has a different colored wall, differing from shades of blue, teal and purples. Luckily, my teal wall actually ended up working well with my blue and navy theme! I really like how it accents everything.

In this post I’m going to go through snapshots of my dorm and highlighting my favorite parts and tips for creating cute storage that is both functional and good to look at. SO many of my dorm pieces are from TJ Maxx or from the dollar spot from Target, so they can’t be linked or guaranteed, but I still wanted to share to show that you can find really affordable and cute decor there. For the sake of my roommate’s privacy, her side of the room won’t be featured, so you’re only seeing my portion! Also, all product names are clickable if you want more information. Let’s get started.

Bed

Processed with VSCO with a5 presetAs someone who practically lives in their bed between doing homework and watching Netflix, I had to make sure that mine was as comfortable and as cute as possible. My headboard and its pattern inspired the color scheme of my decor after I got it as a grad gift. My bestie Savannah and I have the same one, even though we’re at different campuses!! I ended up buying matching pillows from the same website to make sure that the navy color was the same tone. The big tan ones with the navy trim are super comfortable and I have the navy with white trim accent pillow which is a good pop of color against the white comforter. The blue and white striped pillow was a random find, but really adds to the bed!VSCO Cam-3-2.jpg

My comforter cover is from Pottery Barn, and I have the matching sham. To be honest though, I wouldn’t recommend getting a comforter with a cover over top of it. I’d rather have a pre-sold comforter with a pattern overlay, or the comforter on its own with a quilt. The cover and comforter often lose their alignment and make the blanket uneven, and is really difficult to put back on. It also gets dirty quickly but is hard to clean. But, this cover is really soft and cute. But, I do LOVE this throw blanket from Nordstrom. I picked it up during the anniversary sale for cheaper. If you’re interested, I’d wait until the next sale if you want a deal!

These bedskirts are a must-have. It completely covers alllllll of the junk-y looking drawers and fridge underneath. With these, it makes the room look a lot less cluttered, and definitely less dorm-like, which is the goal!

Walls

VSCO Cam-4-1.jpgI wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my wall space until I moved in. I was lucky in that my assigned side had a full wall to decorate, and I decided to do a photo wall. I just got a bunch of pictures printed and used photo mount double sided tape to hang them in an interesting pattern. The “And so the Adventure begins” sign was a TJ Maxx find. Even though you may not be able to find the same one at your local location, TJ’s is a great place for unique and cute wall decor! I also got the key holder piece from there. I love this for keeping track of my keys and jackets! My best friend made the awesome shadowbox collage on the end of the wall. It’s the best and is so sweet!

IMG_5016.JPGI also had a little wall space next to my closet, which I deemed my “gallery wall”. Here I have a sorority sign from my Mom, and a separate print from my hometown. The frame is from TJ Maxx though! This little over-crowded cork board is from the dollar spot at Target. I love the white trim and its been a great place for little notes and cards. The bottom painting was a grad gift from one of my very artistic friends!

Desk

VSCO Cam-2-2.jpgI love how my desk area turned out. I bought this shelf from someone who had used it before me, and I like the shape and shelving. All of the black and white signs as well as the wooden K and “you got this” are from TJ Maxx. That’s always been my go to location for inspirational signs! They’re always SO good! The “you go girl” sign actually lights up and is from Target (I couldn’t find them online, but you can try stores!). I also put another one of those square cork boards from the dollar spot on the wall. All of the picture frames are also (you guessed it!) from TJ Maxx. The “class of 2017” and small “Virginia” ones were grad gifts.

VSCO Cam-5-1.jpgThe huuuuuge wooden Virginia sign is from Etsy. I LOVE it! My mom found it and the company makes all 50 states! I love the texture and the size. It is really heavy though, so I couldn’t hang it with command strips but it works well on this desk shelf!

My lamp and the small blue bins were from target also. I found the link to the lamp base (I just put a white simple shade on top) and it’s on SALE! It’s the perfect size and provides a good amount of light. I love having that small mirror from TJ’s for doing my makeup. I have a triple pencil cup that I also use as makeup brush storage from Target. I just recently got that white bin from TJ Maxx since I always had a pile of stuff accumulating on the side of my desk. This way when I need more space its easy to move, and it looks a little cuter than a random pile of stuff! But, more on storage in the next section. 🙂

My seat cushion was another really sweet gift. They found the same pattern as my headboard and had it custom made!! It’s so cute, and really nice to have. Without it these seats are so uncomfortable!

Storage

VSCO Cam-2-3.jpgStorage is a very important part of dorm decor, and I think I’ve found a huge tip to help: BINS, BINS, BINS!!! Before going to school, I had SO many bins from TJ Maxx and Target. My mom told me I was never going to use all of them, but I did and they help me stay really organized! I use bins in my messy and not pictured closet for my hair tool, shoe and towel storage. I also use bins under my bed for different sweat shirts and cleaning supplies.

I love having a bin that I use for k-cup storage underneath my coffee maker. That was a great TJ Maxx find! I also love having this desk bin. That’s made my desk feel a lot less cluttered. I also have a two bin-fitting piece of furniture from Target. Here, I keep my sweatshirts and my cleaning supplies.

I also have three drawer bins from Sam’s Club (but you can find these anywhere) where I keep the majority of my snacks and other housekeeping things. These are really great, and they hold a bunch of stuff. I was lucky with my dorm to get a huge five drawer dresser that holds a lot of clothing, so I didn’t need these for clothes but I know a lot of girls who do!VSCO Cam-1-3.jpg

I tried to link as many things I could for you guys in case you were interested, but SO many of them were gone or from TJ Maxx! My rug is from Amazon and is the softest and most comfy rug ever! It also comes in a bunch of colors. I always find myself sitting on the floor and doing homework since it’s really cozy.

If you want me to try to find a link for something similar to a product that isn’t linkable, feel free to leave a comment down below and I’ll be SO glad to help! Also, comment down below and let me know what your favorite piece of dorm (or regular room!) decor is. I’m always looking for new ideas! Thanks for stopping by!

My Favorite Beauty Products from 2017

My Favorite Beauty Products from 2017

Hi!! I know 2017 seems waaaaaay far in the past, but I decided it was still early enough into 2018 to do a roundup of my favorite beauty products from 2017. I’m planning on doing monthly roundups of favorites, so I thought I’d kick them off with this post! I found so many products this year that I’ve repurchased or recommended to my friends and family. I decided to split up this post into categories of face, eyes and lips to narrow down my favorites! All of the product names are clickable links if you’re interested in checking out more information!

Face

I don’t wear a full face of makeup everyday of 2017, but when I did, I used all of these products! I don’t ever wear foundation, so I don’t have a favorite one of those.

Concealer

My favorite two concealers (one for under eye, one for all over my face!) are awesome! I’ve used these two for the majority of the year. The First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy concealer is a game-changer. I go more in detail on how I use this and its benefits in my three product under eye circle remedy post. I also love the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch concealer. It’s SO brightening but also has good coverage, so I use it on my under eyes and on my blemishes. I found it way before 2017, but I still kept it constant throughout the year! It’s a dupe for an Esteé Lauder concealer.

Powder

My favorite powder is the Maybelline FIT Me in the shade 230. This is such a matte powder that keeps oil away, and makes your pores appear smaller. This is an affordable product that I use allll over my face and I can’t recommend enough (and I found it on sale)!

Bronzer

I’ve become reliant on bronzer during my more pale months! Haha. I’ve been loving this Hoola Bronzer all year! It’s the perfect shade for when I’m pale to use to give myself a little more color, and also a great shade to use as a matte powder when I’m tan but need a boost! It’s matte, which I love, and comes in a smaller tester size you can find here if you don’t want to commit to the full size.

Blush

Benefit is one of my all time favorite brands. SO many of their products are amazing! This blush has been a staple for me forever. The Hervana blush from Benefit is the perfect natural blush shade. The packaging is so cute, and the product lasts forever! This blush shade would work on so many skin tones. It’s perfect!

Eyes

Eyeshadow for me is fun, but stressful. I always feel like I’m gonna mess up! For reference, my go to eye look is a simple shimmer on the lid with liner and mascara.

Primer

Eyeshadow primer is the product you never know you need until you use it. I cannot stress enough how much my makeup life has changed since I started using the MAC Painterly Paint Pot!!! This is top three best makeup products I’ve found of. all. time. It’s amazing. It keeps your eyeshadow in place, but at the same time I wear it on its own just to get my oily and veiny eye lids to be one shade. This product is the best!!

Shadow

Like I said, I tend to stay away from dark eye shadows. That’s why I love this NARS eye shadow duo in Alhambra. These shadows are so pigmented, and with this duo I’ve found I can make a lot of looks. I can use each on its own, blend the two together, make an ombre style look or put the champagne shade on my lid with the gold in my crease. If you’re more drawn towards sparkle shades, this is the duo for you!

Liner

I’ve always been bad at eyeliner. I still am. But, this Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon makes it SO easy, and it looks SO good. The shade is awesome! It is a dark brown with golden shimmers which looks less harsh than black. This year, I tried to get more into liner and this product helped so much! It really does glide on sooooooo smoooooooth.

Mascara

Mascara is my number one product. If I’m wearing any makeup at all, I’m always wearing mascara. I really feel like it can change your entire look, and I’ve tried so many over the years! The Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara is amazing. It makes your lashes look so good! Over 2017, I repurchased it multiple times. But, I understand its pricy, and in December I found a dupe for it in the L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara. The lash paradise is very similar if you don’t want to splurge, but the Too Faced one is hard to completely replicate!

Lips

I’ve been pretty steady with this lip combo for the majority of 2017! I’m really simple when it comes to lips!! I’m always a fan of a good nude.

Liner

I found the NYX Lip Liner in Nude Beige this year and it’s awesome! The color is a great nude, it lasts for a long time and it glides on super easy. It’s a great base for lipstick. I recommend these liners in any shade! This shade is my favorite though.

Lipstick

I found a baby sized MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick in the Ulta checkout line last summer and I’ve been obsessed ever since! I love the color and it goes on so smooth. It is a matte lipstick which can be a little touchy, but if you follow it with a gloss it’s perfect.

Lipgloss

This was a little harder to narrow down, since I find myself changing up glosses more than any other lip product. But, my go-to always is the NYX Butter Gloss in the shade Madeline. This gloss is SO smooth and silky, stays forever and is such a good shade. I’d repurchase again and again!

I’m so glad I was able to share my favorite products of 2017 here on the blog. Let me know in the comments what your go-to products were from 2017!!!! I’d love to get more suggestions to try in 2018. Thanks for stopping by!

My Current Style Favorites: STAR TREND

My Current Style Favorites: STAR TREND

Hi!!! I’ve recently become SO obsessed with the newest star trend. Star sweaters, jewelry, pants and tops have been popping up everywhere and all of it is super cute! I decided to compile a post of all my favorite star pieces, many of which I own and a few I wish I owned! I made sure to find pieces falling into different categories. I have a couple of pieces of jewelry to share, as well as some comfy sweatshirts and some other cute tops!!

I styled all my clothing snapshots with these Free People jeggings and my Steve Madden slides. I also wore my favorite nude lip, MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick with NYX Butter Gloss in Madeline on top. I’m also wearing my favorite Kendra Scott necklace.

Clothing

VSCO Cam-7.jpgI came across this awesome star sweater randomly at Old Navy a couple of weeks ago. I was so excited that I ended up buying two!! I only photographed the black with gold stars, but I also have the grey and silver one. They are extremely comfortable, and really affordable. They’re on sale right now for $24.97 from their original $34. You can find them here or in any Old Navy store. Here, I’m wearing a size XL because I wanted it oversized (and the sizes at my store were limited!), but I’d say they do run small. For an XL, this fits more like a large. This sweater is perfect for wearing out as a cute outfit, but I’ve also found myself lounging in it with leggings since it’s so comfy!

VSCO Cam-6.jpgI recently found this simple star blouse from Anthropologie. I love the frayed hem at the bottom, and the simple silver stars. The fabric is insanely soft and really comfortable. It was a little bit of a splurge (and part of my Christmas presents!), but I think the quality is worth it. I’d style this casually like I did in the photo with jeggings, or dress it up a bit with some boot cut jeans or with real skinny jeans and boots. You can find this top here, or in stores at Anthro. I’m wearing a small, and I think it fits true to size.

VSCO Cam-4.jpgTarget is a great spot to find casual sweatshirt tops. I’ve purchased SO many recently. They’re all so comfy and affordable! This Grayson and Threads sweatshirt top is so cute and flattering. It’s so simple and looks worn on purpose which makes it super cute. I’d wear this out in a cute outfit, or lounge with shorts or leggings. You can find it in Target stores or here! I also have this other version of this sweatshirt top from Grayson and Threads that has smaller stars all over and is really cute too!

Accessories

I’ve really been gravitating towards my star jewelry lately! I think that its an easy way to add a little sparkle and pop to your outfit. Forever 21 and Francesca’s have a whoooooole lot more star jewelry options, so if you want even more suggestions you can search ‘star’ in the jewelry category!  VSCO Cam-2.jpgVSCO Cam-5.jpgThese star earrings were actually the first pair of star jewelry I bought! I found them over at Francesca’s over the summer, so I can’t find them anymore, but I linked a similar pair here! These are so fun, and the dangle and length aren’t too crazy. I usually gravitate more towards silver jewelry in general, but the gold on these doesn’t look cheap or inexpensive even though they were cheap!

VSCO Cam-1.jpgI found these simple star earrings at a boutique in Auburn, but I linked some similar ones here from Forever 21. I’m thinking about getting these too since they’re so cute and so inexpensive! I think the simple star hoop goes great with almost anything. Every time I wear these I get so many compliments!

VSCO Cam-3.jpgIf dangle earrings aren’t you’re thing, then star studs are just as cute! I love these. I got this pair for Christmas and I’ve liked how they’re a little more toned down from my large dangle ones! I found a similar pair here from Etsy since I’m not sure where these were from, but I also found a cute smaller set on Forever 21 that would be just as simple and cute!

I’m so glad I got to share my current star obsession over here on the blog. I hope you guys enjoyed! Thanks for stopping by!

The BEST Way to Get Rid of Under Eye Circles!!!!

The BEST Way to Get Rid of Under Eye Circles!!!!

Hi!!! We’ve allllll had those nights where we’ve stayed up too late studying, or gone out to late, or (more popularly for me) a Netflix marathon that lasted a few episodes too long. After realizing my under eye circles needed to be under control, I developed this three-product remedy to get rid of those pesky purple bags!

This first product is a First-Aid Beauty concealer that is a game changer. It’s called the “Eye Duty Triple Remedy”, and you can find it here or in stores at Ulta or Sephora. I actually found this product after I had a tubing accident at the end of last summer. I ended up having an awful black eye days before I left for school and recruitment. I walked into Ulta and told them that no matter what the price, I was leaving here with the best product to de-puff and color correct underneath my eye!!! She directed me to this product, in the shade fair/medium, and I’ve used it ever since!!

First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy – Shade fair / medium

I squeeze some of this onto my finger and I dab it underneath my eyes. Then I take the cooling metal side of the applicator and spread the product around. This metal part is always so cold and immediately decreases puffiness, and the product itself has pinky undertones, specifically to target the purply-blue color of under eye circles. I’ll usually take a small beauty blender (I have off brand ones from TJ Maxx) or use my ring finger to dab it in afterwards.

I follow that product with a brightening concealer I found at Target. I’ve used this Maybelline “Dream Lumi Touch Concealer” for years now. You can find it here, or at any drugstore, Target or Ulta. It’s so good at brightening and has good coverage, so it adds the extra brightness that my under eyes need in the morning!!! I just crank this up a bit and brush it under my eyes and blend it in with my mini sponge or my finger. I also use this concealer on my blemishes and it works really well! I have the shade Medium.

Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer – Shade Medium

I find that this concealing duo works well to conceal, but I always use a powder to set it all. My favorite is the Maybelline “FIT Me” Powder in the shade 230. You can find it here, or at any drugstore, Target or Ulta. I LOVE this powder. My best friend Savannah told me about it a couple years ago and I always come back to it! For my under eyes, I actually just use the sponge it comes with. I’ve found that dabbing it straight from that sponge allows for good coverage and a matte finish that doesn’t look too powdery. I also use this all over my face with a big fluffy brush!!

I hope that this post was helpful. I use this three-product method every time that I wear makeup, and I swear by it! Thanks for stopping by.

Welcome to Katie Georges

Hi!!!! My name is Katie and welcome to Katie Georges.

I’m currently a freshman attending Auburn University and have followed SO many blogs over the past few years. After going through my first semester (and hitting many bumps along the way), I realized that there was such a need for a place where people can come together to talk about their own college and life experiences to help others while still sharing beauty, fashion and lifestyle tips. So, I created one.

I decided to simply name my blog my name: Katie Georges. This is a space centered around sharing my stories and experiences and am hoping it becomes a good place for others as well.

Before going to Auburn, I wasn’t able to find many blog sites from college perspectives that covered day-to-day college life and beauty and fashion, so that’s my plan for my blogFeel free to navigate through my College Life, Style and Beauty tabs to see categorized views of alllllll my posts!

I have SO many ideas for upcoming posts and ways to make this site one of a kind. Thank you for tagging along!

My First Semester: an Overview

My First Semester: an Overview

Hi!! If you read my “About Me” page on my site, then you already know that I’m a freshman at Auburn University (if not, you can check out that page here!). I really want to make this blog, Katie Georges, a place where I’m able to share my own college experiences in hopes of helping other people who may be going through similar things, and create a community where we can all freely share; therefore, I’ve deiced to share an overview of my first semester.

As an out of state student (originally from Virginia), I knew I was going to face challenges of homesickness and be forced to make new friends in a place where I had none. I was actually the only person from my small, private high school to attend Auburn, and one of two from my area, so I was really going in on my own.

Sneak peek of my dorm!!!! I’m planning to do a full dorm post when I get back to school!!!

I connected with a girl through mutual friends to be roommates, but since I decided to go to Auburn so late and submitted housing forms wayyyy past when everyone else did, we got split up and I got placed with a random roommate (I did make plans to later switch to be with my original request). Let me preface by saying that I know many people have random roommates and they work out just fine and are livable, but for me, this girl was not a good fit. I was in an upperclassman dorm, so she was a year older and had a boyfriend who turned into her fiancé two weeks into the semester. After visits every few days (I’ll spare you of the details), and some really awkward encounters and conversations, she eventually moved out to be with him and left Auburn. Soon after, the girl I was originally supposed to be with bailed, and I was stuck alone for the first semester of my freshman year.

SO many people tell me how lucky I was, which I agreed with most of the time. But, when  you’re coming from out of state not knowing anyone, it can be difficult to not have a roommate who is usually your first friend and go to for dinner dates and Target runs. I struggled with being alone a lot, but I was lucky to find two of the best friends I’ve made in college so far living down the hall. Ally & Claire are two of the nicest people I know and really made my experience so much better.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset
Go KD!!!! Me and another girl in my sorority from my hometown. You can find my sunglasses here.

I also rushed at the beginning of the fall semester. I’m planning to do a whoooooole post on my recruitment experience, advice and outfit ideas, but I ended up receiving and accepting a bid from Kappa Delta, which was really exciting! Bid day was definitely a highlight of my experience, and I would highly recommend going through recruitment if you’re on the fence! Joining a sorority helped the huge campus at Auburn feel a lot smaller, and allowed me to meet some really great girls I wouldn’t have met before. But, at the same time, there weren’t many girls from out of state in my pledge class and many people tended to hangout with people from their hometown (which I would’ve done if I went somewhere close to home), so making friends didn’t come as easy as I expected it to.

Academically, I made sure to take an easy schedule my first semester, since I knew I would be busy adjusting and trying to be social and didn’t want to be too stressed out with school at the same time. I actually ended up in bowling class which was SO much fun!!! My team ended up being first place!!! But otherwise, college tests are definitely different than high school ones, in terms of material, length, and weight. I’m hoping to eventually do a study tips post or one more focused on how to adapt to college level exams.

To be completely honest, I’m going into my second semester with hope, nerves and anxiety. I really hope that these next few months are full of fun and friendships, and are more enjoyable than my first four. I’m extremely nervous and anxious. As I type, my newest random roommate is moving her stuff into the dorm, and doesn’t seem to have plans on moving out like my prior one. I just know how hard being so far away is now, and I’m hoping my lows get smaller and my highs get higher. But, at the same time, I’m trying to be positive, and any positive energy is greatly appreciated!

I’m looking forward to focusing a lot of my energy towards my site and building it to be a positive and fun space. Stay tuned!
